Ro:Toro at Cultureshock Festival

Ro:toro plays traditional Estonian melodies with a lady piper, an improvising saxophonist and a mad percussionist who plays plastic bowls in a waterbed. The Ro:toro ensemble has its origins in the Viljandi Cultural Academy of the University of Tartu, and its members are regular performers at folk music festivals both in Estonia and abroad. The group works largely with traditional bagpipe tunes, which also inspire its original compositions.

Saxophone and percussion provide a modern counterpoint to the bagpipes, but the sound remains traditional and focused upon bagpipes.

You might be forgiven for thinking this whole concept is pretty hard to beat, but when you add electric guitarist Karl Laanekask,  who has been collecting the folksongs of the Khant, (speakers of the Finno-Ugric language Khanty who live in a very remote part of  Russia) and who will be including some of them in their concert, it will guarantee an enthralling performance.
