IDEAS YARD: Online Discussion on Human Rights and Artistic Expression after Covid-19

In 2020 Europe is celebrating the 70th anniversary of the European Convention on Human Rights. Drafted in 1950 by the then newly established Council of Europe, the oldest and only pan-European body ensuring Human Rights, Democracy and the Rule of Law for 800 million citizens in Europe”. The Council of Europe’s Steering Committee for Culture, Heritage and Landscape (CDCPP) is planning to issue a Manifesto on the Freedom of Expression of Arts/Culture/Heritage in the Digital Era on June 30, 2020 on the occasion of the 9th Plenary Session of CDCPP in Strasbourg and in the framework of the 70th anniversary the European Convention on Human Rights.

The online discussion Human Rights and Artistic Expression after COVID-19 will use this opportunity to address the following questions: What are the main democratic deficits laid bare by COVID-19? Should we rethink our understanding of the European Convention on Human Rights and its application to COVID-19 and its aftermath? What might be the role of artists and their practice in this context?
