No to discrimination

1 October 2007

The European Commission has launched a competition for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 18 to design a poster on the theme of "The European Union and non-discrimination". 2007 is the European Year of Equal Opportunities for All and the aim of the competition is to raise awareness of the importance of tackling discrimination across the EU.

Launching the competition, Vice-President of the European Commission Franco Frattini said, "Abolishing discrimination and ensuring equal treatment and equal opportunities for EU citizens and residents, particularly the youngest among them, are objectives common to the European Union and its Member States. This is a battle we have to fight every single day".

Entrants are invited to together a team of at least four people in one of two age categories - 12-14 year olds or 15-18 year olds. An online registration form must be completed by Monday 24 September and all entries for the competition should be submitted no later than Wednesday 31st October 2007.

Posters will be judged for the appropriateness of the message conveyed, graphic quality, clarity and originality. Three teams from each age category will be selected as UK winners and will attend an awards ceremony in London on Tuesday 20 November 2007 (International Day for the Rights of the Child).

The winners of the first prize in the national competition will compete in a second round at European level. The top three European teams in each age group will be invited to Brussels from 15 to 17 December for a tour of the city and the EU institutions. They will also attend an award ceremony hosted by the European Commission.
