The Scottish European Resources Network consists of European Union (EU) information providers from across Scotland. It was formed in 1996 as a forum for discussion between the individual EU information networks and to represent the views of the networks in a Scottish environment. With major changes occurring in the political arena, as well as the information world, SERN is able to act as a forum for the exchange of ideas on these developments.
SERN used to be known as the Scottish European Relays Network, but it was decided at the annual meeting on 12 October 2000, that the term Relays should be dropped in favour of Resources.
SERN members include:
- European Documentation Centres - academic sector
- Enterprise Europe - business sector
- European Information Association - network of EU information professionals
- European Public Information Centres - general public
- Eurydice - education sector, professional and policy matters
- Local Authorities
- Scottish Government Europe Division
- Scottish Parliament Information Centre
- Voluntary Organisations
Regular meetings are held to bring together all of the Scottish European Resources Networks. These meetings provide an opportunity for:
- exchanges of views and experience
- learning about key European developments
- discussing changes to information policy
- getting to know each other
A working group has been formed to carry out the tasks of SERN. These include organising the annual meeting, representing the network, and developing the website.
A consultative group has also been established to act as a sounding board for the working group and to provide assistance and advice in SERN's activities.
